The A90 Supra's Stock Exhaust Problem
The A90 Supra uses BMW's B58 engine -- a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six making 382 horsepower. It's a genuinely good engine. Anyone who's driven an F30 340i knows how strong the B58 pulls. The problem is what Toyota did to the exhaust system.
The A90's exhaust is muffled to the point that it barely makes noise. Toyota engineered maximum quietness to appeal to a broad market. That's understandable for a mass-market product. But you didn't buy a Supra to hear nothing.
The B58 sounds excellent when freed from that muffling. A properly set up A90 exhaust has a deep, authoritative tone -- distinctly different from the S58 in the M3/M4, smoother and with more obvious turbo whoosh character.
A90 Exhaust System Layout
- Downpipe: Exits the turbo, includes a catalytic converter. Biggest power opportunity.
- Mid-pipe: Connects downpipes to the rear section. Resonator delete options live here.
- Catback: The rear muffler section. Single or dual exit depending on year.
Important: 2020-2021 Supra runs a single exhaust exit on the driver's side. 2022+ got a dual-exit setup as standard. Confirm your model year before ordering a catback -- it affects fitment and tip configuration.
Catback Exhaust for A90 Supra
A catback swap is the most accessible upgrade for the A90. No emissions equipment touched, bolt-on install, immediate sound improvement.
What to expect from a quality A90 catback:
- Deep, resonant tone at idle and cruise
- Significantly more presence under WOT
- Turbo flutter and whoosh audible on throttle lift
- Crackle and pop on overrun with a supporting tune

Downpipe: Where the Power Comes From
The B58 responds well to downpipe upgrades. The OEM catalytic converter restricts flow at higher power levels. A high-flow cat or catless downpipe removes that restriction and gives a tune substantially more to work with.
Typical B58 gains from catless downpipe plus tune:
- 30-50 whp increase over stock
- Improved turbo spool characteristics across the RPM range
- More aggressive sound -- crackle and burble increase significantly
As always: check local emissions laws. California visual inspections catch catless setups immediately.
Sound Comparison: Stock vs Catback vs Full System
Stock A90
Extremely muted. Near-library quiet at idle. Under full throttle, you hear the turbo more than the exhaust note. Toyota clearly prioritized noise isolation.
Catback Only
Massive improvement. The B58 character comes through -- a growl at cruise that builds to a real roar under WOT. Turbo sounds become more audible because the system is no longer suppressing them. Right first upgrade for street Supras.
Catback + Catless Downpipe
Loudest street configuration. Aggressive from idle. With a tune, full crackle and pop capability. Best for track use or less emission-regulated areas.
Install Notes
On a lift, a catback swap takes 1-2 hours. Factory system uses clamp connections and rubber hangers. Straightforward for quality systems built to OEM specs.
Downpipe work is more involved -- close to the turbo outlet, requires more clearance. Budget 3-4 hours. Use a torque wrench on the downpipe flange -- over-torquing cracks flanges and that's expensive to repair.
Before You Buy: Key Checks
- Confirm model year -- 2020/2021 vs 2022+ have different rear configurations
- Single-exit catbacks on 2022+ cars can look odd -- verify with photos of your specific year
- Resonator deletes are cheap but create drone at highway speeds on some setups
- Valve-equipped catbacks give you flexibility -- civil daily, loud when you want it
Pairing the Exhaust with Other A90 Mods
The B58 responds extremely well to ECU tuning. Stage 1 (no supporting mods) regularly pushes to 420-440whp. Add the downpipe and you're looking at 450-480whp with proper fueling. Beyond exhaust: intercooler upgrade, charge pipe reinforcement (the stock plastic charge pipe splits under aggressive boost), and intake work complete the foundation.
